Problem

Students and young adults face a variety of financial decisions that will significantly impact their future.  Without the support of family or friends, a lot of students don’t have sufficient resources to learn about financial basics such as credit cards, student loans, and debit card benefits and risks.

Solution

Design a learning experience using the cognitive apprenticeship learning theory to educate 17-25 year olds about basic financial concepts through a mobile app.

The Process

01.

Competitive Research

02.

Ideation and Sketching

03.

Mid-Fidelity Prototype

Competitive Research

Analyzed 3 learning experiences focusing on the concept of financial education. This included a game created by the FDIC, a documentary on Netflix called Money Explained, and a learning guide on Investopedia.

Spreadsheet with credit card information and resources for financial education, including links.
Mind map with categories: Content, Modeling, Coaching, Discussion, and Exploration.
Mobile app user interface screens including welcome, module, and discussion sections with content.

Ideation & Sketching

Brainstorm and sketch features that support the learners goals and the learning theory approach I focused on, cognitive apprenticeship.

Mid-Fidelity Prototype

Created a prototype in Fiigma that represents the sketches that could be tested in the future.

Mobile app showing credit card tools, net worth, and Kate Marks details on screen.
